Below is what each reference costs, what the money is actually buying, and where the pricing gets strange.

Rolex 1908 Prices at a Glance

Two things jump out of that table. The white gold reference is the most expensive of the two strap models at retail and the cheapest on the secondary market, which is a familiar pattern for white metal dress watches. And the platinum breaks the rule entirely by trading above its own list.

What the Rolex 1908 Actually Is

Rolex introduced the Perpetual 1908 at Watches and Wonders in 2023 as the replacement for the Cellini, ending a line that had run in one form or another since 1968. The name is the year Hans Wilsdorf registered the Rolex trademark, which tells you the brand wanted this to read as heritage rather than as a new experiment.

The specification is the same across every reference. A 39mm case, 9.5mm thick, roughly 47mm lug to lug, with a domed and finely fluted bezel and 50m of water resistance. Inside is the calibre 7140, built specifically for this collection, with a Chronergy escapement, a Syloxi silicon hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers and a 66-hour power reserve, certified to the Superlative Chronometer standard of minus two to plus two seconds per day.

The screw-down caseback is fluted and set with a sapphire crystal. That is worth pausing on. Rolex almost never shows you a movement, and on the 1908 it does.

Why the Rolex 1908 Price Sits Where It Does

It has never been made in steel

There is no stainless 1908 and there is no two-tone 1908. Every case is 18k gold or 950 platinum, and a 39mm solid gold case with a solid gold bezel carries real metal cost before anyone has assembled anything. This is the single biggest reason the entry price of the collection sits above $20,000 while a steel Oyster Perpetual starts in the low four figures.

The movement was built for this watch only

The calibre 7140 is not a Datejust movement in a dress case. Rolex developed it for the 1908, sized it to fit a slim case, and finished it to be looked at, with a skeletonized rotor and Rolex Côtes de Genève striping on the bridges. Development cost spread across one collection instead of five is expensive, and it shows up in the sticker.

The dials are more work than they look

The gold references use what Rolex calls an intense black or intense white lacquer dial with a fine satin finish, applied gold numerals at 3, 9 and 12, and a small seconds register at 6. Flat, deliberate, easy to underrate in photos.

The platinum takes a different route with an ice blue guilloché dial cut in a rice grain pattern that radiates from the small seconds counter, ringed by a band of crimped guilloché around the minute track. That dial is the reason the platinum has its own market.

Rolex prices dress watches against its own catalogue

A gold 1908 lands near a gold Datejust and well under a Day-Date. That positioning is intentional. The 1908 is the entry into solid gold Rolex for someone who does not want a President bracelet or a fluted-and-diamond presentation.

The white gold 52509 on alligator strap. It lists higher than the yellow gold at around $28,800, but on the secondary market it is the softest reference in the collection and clean examples turn up in the low twenties.

White gold reads as steel to anyone who is not looking closely, which suppresses demand and is exactly why it is the value play if you are buying the watch for yourself rather than for resale.

If you want the gold to look like gold, the yellow gold 52508 on strap is the next step up and generally holds a slightly tighter range.

Rolex 1908 Prices by Reference

Note how compressed the reference list is. Compared with a Datejust, where bezel, bracelet, dial and metal combinations run into the hundreds, the 1908 gives you eight choices. That makes valuing one straightforward and makes a mismatched configuration obvious.

The Settimo Bracelet Changes the Math

At Watches and Wonders 2025 Rolex added the Settimo, a seven-piece link bracelet in solid 18k yellow gold with slightly domed links and a concealed Crownclasp. It is offered on the yellow gold 52508 only.

List for the bracelet version sits around $35,000 against $27,500 for the same watch on alligator. That is roughly $7,500 of difference, and almost all of it is gold weight. If you are cross-shopping, understand what that buys you: the bracelet version is a fundamentally different object on the wrist and a fundamentally different resale proposition, because a solid gold bracelet has a floor under it that a leather strap does not.

The practical consequence for buyers is that a 52508 on strap and a 52508 on Settimo are not comparable listings even though they share a reference number. Check which one you are looking at before you compare prices.

The Platinum 52506 Is the Outlier

The platinum reference arrived in 2024, a year after the collection launched, and it is the only 1908 that consistently trades above list. At launch the price was reported around $30,900. Authorized dealer listings in mid-2026 show it at $33,600. Secondary market figures vary a lot by source, from roughly $43,000 at the low end to the mid-fifties, which mostly tells you the sample size is small and the transactions are thin.

Two things are driving it. Platinum is denser and more expensive to machine than gold, so the raw cost is higher and the watch has noticeably more heft. And the ice blue dial is a Rolex convention: ice blue has historically signified platinum across the catalogue, so the dial is a status marker before it is a colour choice.

One caution. Dealer price trackers through 2026 have shown the platinum drifting down over a twelve-month window rather than climbing. Rolex 1908 vs Rolex Cellini

This is the comparison most buyers actually want, because the Cellini is cheaper and it is not obvious what the extra money gets you.

The modern Cellini ran from 2014 to 2023 in four sub-models, all 39mm, all in 18k Everose or white gold: Cellini Time, Cellini Date, Cellini Dual Time and Cellini Moonphase. On the pre-owned market the Time sits around $12,000 to $15,000, the Date and Dual Time in the $15,000 to $18,000 range, and the Moonphase, the one collectors chase, from about $22,000 to $29,000.

The honest summary: the Cellini gave you choice, including a genuine moonphase complication that the 1908 has no answer for. The 1908 gives you a purpose-built movement, chronometer certification you can point to, and a caseback that shows the work. If you want a complication, buy a Cellini Dual Time or Moonphase and save five figures. If you want the best-built simple Rolex dress watch, the 1908 is the one.

Rolex 1908 vs Datejust

Different jobs. The Datejust is a watch you wear every day with a bracelet and a date window and 100m of water resistance. The 1908 is a watch you wear with a jacket, on leather, with 50m of water resistance and no date.

On price, a steel Datejust starts far below any 1908. A solid gold Datejust lands close to a gold 1908, and that is where the real decision sits. At similar money you are choosing between a bracelet watch with a date and a strap watch with a display caseback and a slimmer case. Neither is the upgrade. They are alternatives.

What Actually Changes a Rolex 1908 Price

• Metal, above everything else. Platinum can be double a white gold example of the same age and condition.
• Strap versus Settimo bracelet. Around $7,500 at list, and more than that on the secondary market where gold bracelets are scarce.
• Box and papers. On a watch this young, a full set is close to expected. An incomplete set on a 2023 to 2025 watch is a real discount and a real question.
• Dial colour. Black and white are close in value on the gold references. The ice blue is only available in platinum, so it is not a dial choice, it is a metal choice.
• Strap and clasp condition. Alligator wears. A tired strap is cheap to replace, but a worn 18k Dualclasp is not, so check the clasp separately.
• Case polishing. The 1908 case is highly polished from the factory, which hides light refinishing but also means a heavy polish will soften the bezel fluting. Look at the fluting under light.

Retail Versus What You Should Actually Pay

For the gold references, the pre-owned market is genuinely cheaper than the boutique. A 52509 that lists near $28,800 can be bought in the low twenties in excellent condition with a full set. That is an unusual position for a Rolex and it exists because dress watches do not carry the waitlist premium that sports models do.

For the platinum, the opposite is true. There is no version of that watch available under list right now, and anyone quoting you retail on a 52506 is either mistaken or selling something else.
